Abstract

In the ever-expanding urban landscapes of the 21st century, urban poverty stands as a spectre with its complex interplay of socio-economic and cultural factors that shape people’s lives. This study emphasizes the importance of understanding poverty as a socially constructed and culturally embedded phenomenon. This paper is an anthropological exploration of the relationship between urban slums and popular culture in the city of Chennai. Popular culture has emerged as a ubiquitous force, and it plays a multifaceted role, profoundly influencing youth, especially those of urban slums. Popular culture acts as the primary source of information, entertainment, and aspirations by reflecting and influencing the lived experiences of slum dwellers. We seek to unravel how popular culture shapes and reflects the daily lives, aspirations, and social dynamics in urban slums while contributing to understanding the dynamic cultural landscapes of present-day urban spaces.
